Scottish actor Richard Madden is now the hot favourite to be the next to play Britain’s most famous fictional spy, James Bond.
As recently as last month Madden was being quoted at 10/1 by William Hill. He is now at 11/8. Previous favourite Tom Hiddleston has seen his odds fall from 4/5 to 11/4.
Madden certainly has the attributes Bond producers often look for: handsome, British, and well-established as an actor but not famous enough to disrupt the franchise. As Odds Digest noted in October, though the Bond producers make stars, they rarely employ them, except as villains. Neither of the three last Bonds, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig, were household names before taking on the iconic role.
Producers Preparing an Offer
Formerly best known for playing Robb Stark in epic fantasy saga Game of Thrones, Madden has raised his profile this year with his leading role in British TV phenomenon Bodyguard. His handling of both action and romance won many fans including, apparently, Bond producer Barbara Broccoli.
A source told the Mail on Sunday, “it’s seriously looking like he is going to get the job. Not only is he on top of Barbara’s list, but she is preparing to offer the role.”
All other candidates have seen their odds lengthen, with Idris Elba now at 5/1 with William Hill and Tom Hardy at 6/1.
