The nominations for the 2019 Golden Globes were released today, and as predicted, A Star is Born features prominently. The blockbuster remake has been nominated for best dramatic motion picture, while also securing nominations for its stars Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the best performance in a drama categories. Cooper has also picked up a best director nomination.
British actor Christian Bale is the favourite to win the award for best actor in a comedy or musical for his role as former Vice President Dick Cheney in Adam McKay’s new film Vice. The buzz around Bale’s performance is particularly noteworthy as the film is not set to be released in the United States until Christmas Day.
The Golden Globe Awards are chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and are traditionally seen as a good indication of who will achieve Oscar glory later in the award season.
Following these nominations, Bale is now the bookies’ second favourite to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. William Hill are quoting Bale’s chances at 3/1, behind Cooper who is currently priced at 8/13. Currently most pundits are predicting that both win their respective Golden Globes, thus setting up an intriguing showdown for the Best Actor Oscar in February next year.
Bale has been previously nominated three times for an Academy Award, winning the best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2011 for his role in the Fighter.
