Singer and actor Lady Gaga is currently the nailed-on favourite to win the Academy Award for Best Actress in February. Most bookies are only offering 11/10 on a win for the 32 year old New York native.
However, it seems likely that odds will lengthen as we get nearer to the ceremony. Gaga and her co-star Bradley Cooper are currently everywhere, including at the top of the British singles chart for their song Shallow. Once the publicity begins to fade the other nominees will be able to take a greater share of the spotlight.
Stars Aligning for Glenn Close?
Hollywood veteran Glenn Close is currently second favourite at 5/2 for her role in The Wife. Close has been nominated six times but has yet to secure a win, the most nominations of any living actor. Though the film is not generally considered to be a future classic, critics have been near universal in their praise of Close’s performance. At 72 years old, Close may not have many great roles left to play: the Academy might take the chance to award her for a lifetime’s work.
Third favourite Olivia Colman is at 9/2, though it seems unlikely that she would be able to overcome the strong momentum around Close and Gaga. However, things can change quickly. Oscar nominees are only ever one comment or news story from falling from favour, as Benedict Cumberbatch found out a few years ago.
