A professional footballer from France, William Alain André Gabriel Saliba (born 24 March 2001), plays center-back for Premier League team Arsenal and the France national team.

On July 25, 2019, by the club, Saliba’s “long-term” contract with Arsenal was announced. According to media reports, the deal had a five-year term and cost £27 million to transfer.

Saliba elected to join Arsenal despite opposition from rival Tottenham Hotspur, whose interest in the player dates back to late 2018. Both teams met Saint-valuation Étienne’s of the player, but Saliba chose to join Arsenal.

In 2020, Saliba returned to Arsenal, where he was given the number 4 jersey. He played his first match for Arsenal against MK Dons in a pre-season friendly on August 25, 2020.

Also, one can note that he was not used as a substitute in the 2020 FA Community Shield, in which Arsenal took over Liverpool 5-4 on penalties after the score remained tied at one after 90 minutes of the match.

After being removed from the club’s competitive teams for the 2020-21 season, he could only play for Arsenal U23s. In Papa John’s Trophy away games against Gillingham and AFC Wimbledon, he appeared for them and was sent off in the latter match.

Before a January six-month loan to France, Arsenal director Mikel Arteta would later express “remorse about the decision.”

Saliba entered the Nice of Ligue 1 on loan on 4th January 2021 for the balance of the 2020–21 campaign. After rumored preparations for a loan to an unknown EFL Championship club were abandoned, he returned to France. He later made his Ligue 1 debut on January 6, 2021, in a 2-0 loss in a game with Brest.

Saliba, who is under contract to Arsenal until 2024, was only loaned out for the third consecutive season a year ago by Arteta, but he has since emerged as one of the top young defenders in Europe, winning the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year title and earning full French international status.

Saliba had pleased Arsenal’s management over the summer, and it was reinforced when Arteta selected him to start against Crystal Palace on the first day of the season. He made his club debut on that occasion, and he was brilliant as Palace easily defeated them 2-0 at Selhurst Park.

What preceded the contract?

Following a fruitful negotiation before the U.S., according to Freddie Paxton, Arsenal defender William Saliba has already agreed to a new contract extension with Arsenal. Saliba’s growth had satisfied Arsenal, and they considered him a key component of their future.

Some people speculated that Arsenal might be holding off on publicizing Saliba’s deal until they got more information about Hector Bellerin’s future. Saliba was rumored to want to steal Bellerin’s present seat at number 2, which has been held by Saliba.

However, Arsenal could have announced the new contract and the new jersey number simultaneously. If Saliba had truly agreed to a new agreement, it makes sense why the club could be holding off on confirming it.

In July, after Saliba’s cameraman was allegedly seen filming at London Colney, there was an additional social media rumor. There is no doubt that Edu and the player’s agent spoke that day. All this shows that it’s plausible, but it doesn’t prove Paxton’s assertion that Saliba has approved a delay.

After his promising performances during the preseason and on loan thus far, Arsenal supporters are thrilled to see the player finally commit to his future.

Saliba’s representatives have now been contacted by Arsenal management, who have eagerly signed him to a long-term deal.

Earlier in the summer, teams like Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Barcelona were said to be interested in Saliba. However, Arsenal is optimistic that Saliba will sign a new contract because of how important he is to Arteta’s 1st prospects at the Emirates Stadium.
