There are many big fights that would thrill UFC fans. Top of the list is Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier completing their trilogy, perhaps at heavyweight. Not far behind would be a matchup between the two charismatic fan favourites Conor McGregor against Donald Cerrone.
Though both fighters seem keen, momentum has stalled while all parties work out the details. Currently the main sticking point is the UFC’s insistence that though the two fighters are huge draws, as there was no championship on the line, a fight between them could not headline an event.
At this stage in his career McGregor, the biggest star in the sport, is not used to taking second billing. However, there may be some room for negotiation; that is, if the UFC give their biggest asset a piece of the company.
McGregor told fans in Chicago this weekend that he had “no problem” with being further down the card, “but if they want me to push that (the event)… give me my rightful shares in the UFC.”
Cowboy Cerrone vs Conor McGregor Odds
Though the fight itself might be doubt, that hasn’t stopped Irish bookmaker PaddyPower from offering odds on the event. According to the odds, McGregor is a 4/9 favourite for the fight, with Cerrone at 13/8.
Cerrone, a longtime veteran of the UFC, has always been popular with fans due to willingness to fight anyone, anytime. One of the most talented fighters never to have won a Championship belt, a bout with McGregor may now be his best way to secure his legacy, and, of course, a huge payday.
McGregor has seen his star wane slightly after his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov last October, his first fight since taking a sabbatical from MMA to fight Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match. Still, the “Notorious One” has no problems selling seats, or newspapers.
McGregor made headlines again recently with news that he was being asked to take a paternity test by a woman claiming that she he was the father of her baby. Then last week he was arrested in Miami for allegedly smashing a fan’s phone.
Whatever McGregor does next, one this is for sure: it’ll be interesting, and we’ll be watching.
