William Hill is offering odds of 6/1 on South Africa claiming its third Miss Universe title later this month. Miss Universe is one of the “Big Four” international beauty pageants and is broadcast in more than 190 countries to an audience of half a billion people.
South Africa is represented this year by Tamaryn Green. Should Ms Green succeed in her bid to win the competition she will receive the crown from last year’s winner, and fellow South African, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.
On her Instagram account Ms Green shared her excitement to be in the competition. This was “the moment I’ve been looking forward to for so long,” she said, “to wear the South African name across my chest, and in my heart.”
This year’s competition is taking place in Thailand, with the winner expected to be crowned on December 17th. The contestants are currently taking part in official events throughout the country, such as a visit to SiamSnail Eco Park to learn about how snails are used in skincare products.
Although beauty pageants have fallen out of favour in Europe, they are still very popular in other parts of the world, particularly Asia, South America and the USA.
Other leading favourites are Miss Philippines and Miss USA at 7/1, and Miss Puerto Rico and Miss Thailand at 8/1. All of these territories provide high viewing figures for the contest.
