FA Cup

With Liverpool having suffered a 2-1 shock defeat at the hands of Wolves in the FA cup third round, and a fourth round draw that has seen Manchester United handed an away tie to Arsenal, British bookmakers have clipped the odds of Tottenham Hotspur lifting this year’s FA Cup from 8/1 to 7/1, making them third favourites to win the competition outright.

Spurs kicked off the third round on Friday with a 7-0 away drubbing of Tranmere Rovers as manager Mauricio Pochettino played a full-strength side – in recognition of the fact that England’s two domestic cup competitions may represent the only realistic chance of silverware for the North London side this season.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea, on the other hand, all preferred to field weaker sides as wider league interests dominated team sheet line-ups over the FA cup weekend.

Wembley Connection Adds Value

As a result, Spurs have been attracting increasing interest from punters as the FA Cup’s strongest value bet proposition.

One further contributing factor may be Spur’s prolonged Wembley connection. With the FA having now confirmed that both this year’s semi-finals will be played at the national stadium on top of the final, Spur’s continuing dispute with contractors in agreeing a date for a return to a refurbished White Hart Lane has essentially rendered the national stadium as de-facto home ground.

And with guaranteed home advantage for the remainder of the tournament only three rounds away – with one of those rounds involving an away game to Crystal Palace – the stars may finally be aligning for a return of the FA Cup to the white half of London for the first time in eighteen years.
