Not only is Tom Hanks one of the most loved men in Hollywood, he is also one of the most critically acclaimed, and commercially successful, actors of all time. According to bookmakers, 2020 could well be the year that he finally wins a historic third Oscar.
Hanks is only the second man to win consecutive Oscars, for his performances in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. However, the latter was in 1994, and he has not been nominated since Castaway in 2001. For an actor of his standing, that’s a long time to wait for another statue.
Bookmaker Paddy Power now has Hanks a 13/5 favourite to win next year’s Best Actor Oscar. Though Paddy Power does not go so far as to predict which role he might win that award for, there are a couple of likely candidates.
The standout choice is surely A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Based on a true story, this upcoming film explores a meeting between a cynical journalist and legendary children’s TV presenter Fred Rogers. One of Hollywood’s most popular actors playing one of televisions best-loved icons? And released in November? This screams Oscar-bait.
There might even be the chance that Tom Hanks makes history by becoming the first actor to win for a vocal part. Hanks recently confirmed that with Toy Story 4 he was hanging up his spurs and would no longer be voicing Woody the Cowboy. It’s just possible that the Academy decides to honour two decades of sterling work by giving him the biggest award they can.
