BBC America’s breakout hit Killing Eve has emerged as the bookies’ clear favourite to win the Best Television Series (Drama) category at the 76th Golden Globes ceremony next month. William Hill are SkyBet are both quoting odds of 8/11 on a Killing Eve victory.
The other nominated series are Homecoming, Pose, The Americans and Bodyguard. Of these, Homecoming is widely seen as the second favourite, with William Hill offering 7/2. At 8/1, Bodyguard is the relative longshot. Bodyguard star Richard Madden, widely tipped to be the next actor to play James Bond, has also been nominated for a best actor award.
Killing Eve is written by British writer, actor and director Phoebe Waller-Bridge, perhaps best known for her role in Fleabag. Making a habit of picking up trophies, Waller-Bridge has recently been presented with the Screen Skills Writing Award at the British Women in Film & TV Awards.
Critical response to Killing Eve has been enthusiastic, with Brad Newsome of the Sydney Morning Herald saying that the show was, “a surprisingly fresh, taut and entertaining take on a thoroughly durable genre.” Rachel Cooke went further, writing in the New Statesman that, “Waller-Bridge really might, after all, be the best thing to happen to women and TV since Sarah Jane Smith snuck aboard the Tardis in 1973.”
The show has picked up several nominations, including one for best actress for its star, Sandra Oh, who will also be co-hosting the ceremony.
