British bookmaker William Hill has begun to take bets on on who will be the next actor to play Batman. Despite having tried to distance himself from the role, Jake Gyllenhaal has been installed as the favourite at 3/1.
The superhero vacancy was first reported by Variety last year. According to the film industry bible, Warner Brothers “is not currently moving forward with Batman and Superman movies featuring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, respectively.” Affleck recently confirmed that he would not be involved in the next Batman film, though he said that he was “excited” to see director “@MattReevesLA vision come to life.”

At 4/1, second favourite is Oscar Isaacs, best known for playing Poe Dameron in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Close behind at 5/1 is Michael B Jordan. The Creed star is no stranger to superhero movies, having played Erik Killmonger in Black Panther.
Though Gyllenhaal is probably the safest choice of the three, Jordan in particular would give the producers a chance to take the franchise in a fresh direction after the relatively disappointing performance of the Affleck years.
The most recent actor to be linked to the role, on social media at least, is Robert Pattinson. However, despite that buzz William Hill are yet to offer odds on the Twilight star.
