With summer increasingly a memory, our attentions are turning to the wonders of winter – scarves, the Strictly final, and, of course, Christmas. And when it comes to the British Christmas, excitement over which pop star will secure the coveted number one spot in the Christmas singles charts is up there with tinsel and turkey.
With the volume of record sales peaking in the Christmas period, coming out on top come December 25th carries a rare prestige. Previous holders of the honor include superstars like Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Queen, but in recent years songs raising money for charity have done particularly well.
American pop star Ariana Grande was last year’s favorite, being quoted at 2 to 1 as late as mid-November. However English blogger Ladbaby came from nowhere to win with a sausage roll-filled parody We Built This City. Perhaps more remarkably the song also reached number 31 in the Australian digital track charts.
Ed Sheeran Favourite
This year Ed Sheeran is the early favorite, with Paddy Power offering odds of 2/1 on the tattooed redhead. Last year’s favorite Ariana Grande is second in the running at 5 to 1, with Louis Capozzi at 6 to 1. At this point there is no indication of which songs will be in contention in December.
Though Sheeran may fear the arrival of an unexpected charity parody, he has achieved the Christmas number one on a previous occasion, hitting the top spot in 2017 for his song Perfect.
