If betting markets are to be believed, the usually conservative and safe Grammy Awards are about to make their most controversial choice in years. British bookmaker William Hill now has “This is America” by Childish Gambino odds-on favourite at 1/2 (American odds: -200) to win the prestigious Record of the Year award.
The song went straight into the Billboard Hot 100 at number 1, and references gun violence, mass shootings and racism. Previous winners of the award are “All I Wanna Do” by Sheryl Crow, and “Don’t Worry Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin.
Premiered during Saturday Night Live, the video for “This Is America” also became a sensation, and is closing in on half a billion views on YouTube.
Childish Gambino is the musical alter ego of actor Donald Glover, perhaps best known for playing the young Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars prequel Solo: A Star Wars Story, and for his multi-award winning autobiographical comedy-drama series Atlanta. Glover previously won a Grammy award for Best Traditional R&B Performance for his song Redbone.

Second favourites, at 2/1 (American odds format: +200), are Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper for “Shallow”. Kendrick Lemar and SZA are third in the running at 6/1 (+600), with Cardi B featuring J Balvin and Bad Bunny at 10/1 (+1000) for their summer hit “I Like It”.
The Grammys are the most prestigious awards in the music industry calendar. The 61st annual ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on February 11th.
